I can’t believe that just happened. I really thought he was done. I’m so all over the place—and no closer to deciding. If anything, I think this is all making it worse.

“Come on, sweetheart,” Grayson calls from the other side of the door.

“Okay, ready.” I smile and step out from the bathroom.

We head downstairs to meet Richard Brown, Attorney at Law. He’s a chubby man of about fifty, balding, but with blond on the sides and a moustache to match. We go over the details of my situation. He asks me if George is still an active member in the service, because if so, our divorce would fall under the Service Members Civil Relief Act. This entitles active-duty service members to delay a divorce or any civil litigation.

“He is active for another month,” Grayson offers.

“Well, then you might want to wait that month.” Mr. Brown sighs.

“Here’s my other question. I built up my business—using his life-insurance policy—under the assumption that he was dead. I’m aware that I will probably have to pay back the money I received, but how will the divorce affect my business?” I’ll be pissed if I have to give George anything after what that son of a bitch did to me.

“Well, Mrs. Campbell—”

“Ms. Campbell.” Grayson and I correct him in unison.

“Ms. Campbell. Given the situation with him going AWOL and kidnapping you, this whole thing will most likely play in your favor. You said the authorities are looking for him now?”

“Yes,” we both say.

“Well, let’s do the paperwork for the divorce and custody. When he is caught, we will file immediately.” He has me sign some papers about being his client, petitioning for divorce, and sole custody of Morgan. “Are you sure you don’t want support?”

“I want nothing but to have him out of my life.” I sign my last document. Our meeting is then adjourned, and he leaves.

“Ugh! I need to sit down and do a budget. Thanks for cosigning that loan for me, baby. I’m going to be paying the insurance company for a long time.” I turn to my computer and pull up the new software he installed. “Maybe your finance guy can help me figure out the tax situation with that. No, I’ll probably have to get a tax attorney. Won’t the government have to pay back money to me and to the insurance company? Damn ... this is such a mess.”

“Sweetheart, I’ll take care of it.” Grayson grabs the mouse and closes the screen.

“No, this is my mess, baby. You’re not taking care of this.”

“Well, let me at least get my people on it to find out what needs to be done. You have enough to worry about.” He rubs my shoulders.

“You and your people.” I laugh. “I wish I had ‘people.’” I do the air quotation marks.

“You’ll have them once you decide I’m the man for you. My people will become your people. Just one of the many perks to marrying me.” He helps me out of the chair. “C’mon, let’s go shopping for Aunt Hazel’s birthday gift.
